after a thorough and exhaustive (or should I say exhausting) search the Copier Research Assessment Panel has spoken and it is not good news for Xerox. So here was what we learned in the process. (Click on the logo to hear how they likely feel)
- All things being equal… customer service wins. Xerox had some features that Canon did not… and vice versa. At the end of the day it was the ability to listen and respond that put Canon head and shoulders about Xerox. Our inital complaint and the reason for the assessment was the low reliability of our current Xerox machines. After hearing that for months and months, our sales team gave us a flier that assured us that if we resigned the contract we would be covered by a full replacement warrantee that would replace any machine that we were not happy with… for any reason. Newsflash… we already are unhappy with these machines!!
- Technology really is amazing. During this assessment we have been exposed to dozens of technological improvements that will give us a whole new set of capabilities. We are looking to add color capability as well as begin to explore a paperless office (ironic to say that when we are buying copiers whose job is to create paper documents)
- Teams see things that individuals do not. We were a cross functional/department team. We all were able to bring different needs and requirements to the table. At the end of the day we had lots of cool conversations that led to this huge decision.
- Kinkos is making a fortune on $0.59 copies. Our contract with Canon is small potatoes by the standard of a huge chain like that and there is a HUGE difference in price between what we pay and what is charged at a chain like that.
- Big decisions go from a simmer to a boil quickly. Our team has been working on this for several months, but at the end of the conversation this went from a theory to a signed contract in one day. Amazing when you think about it, but we were confident in the new solution and in the team that will be delivering and supporting it.
The full text of the announcement to the staff is below
Hello, staff:
Over the last few months, a team made up of staff representatives has been busy researching our printing and copying needs. Based on your feedback, an assessment of our current equipment (on both the first and third floors), and the capabilities of newer copier/printer technology, our team has made the following observations and recommendations:
Here’s what we heard from you:
- A desire for machines that don’t jam
- The flexibility to print small color jobs on the third floor (as evident by all the desktop inkjet printers)
- Ability to print confidentially
- The convenience to print on cardstock & labels–without jams
- A need for simple, straightforward faxing, with reliable inbound faxes
- To be able to easily scan to email
- You love Esperanza
- You would like training to learn all features of the machines
Here’s what we discovered:
After getting your input, then meeting with vendors, attending demos, and comparing features from the top three copier companies, Xerox, Canon and Minolta, (others were considered, but didn’t make cut), the team has unanimously concluded that Canon offers the most comprehensive service and most advanced technology that could both help make your job easier, and move the ministries of Mariners Church forward.
So, what does all this mean?
It means in true Mariners style, things are moving quickly! Beginning the week of Dec. 1, Canon will begin installing new systems on the third floor, followed by the first floor equipment during the week of Dec 8. If you are planning to print a significant job between Dec. 1 and Dec. 12, please contact Megan in the Comm Dept at (x282, mmcfarlane@marinerschurch.org) to coordinate.
There are still many details of the transition being worked out…
That said, we’re sure you have questions, so we encourage you to contact team member Megan (x282, mmcfarlane@marinerschurch.org), who will be able to direct your questions to the right person. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be communicating with you via theHUB, posting updates as we receive new information. We are planning to have formal training during the week of Dec. 15. In addition, representatives from Canon will be on-site starting Dec. 1 to help with the transition.
We realize this is a significant transition that will no doubt bring a brief season of learning for us. Yet we are confident that we’ll be happy with the results.
Sincerely,
Your Copier Assessment Team

Great post bro. I’m excited about your copy progress. We’re regretting our copier move. Our new Riso is a you know what. I love the Kyocera because it does everything, but the riso wasn’t worth the price of admission. Shoulda gone with the Canon.
